🏙️ Auckland: A Love-Hate Letter to the Big Smoke
Once you’ve seen one bit of Auckland, you might think you’ve seen it all — traffic, sprawl, and a skyline that’s always under construction. Having lived there and commuted from the North Shore to Manukau (yes, worse than London), I’ve earned the right to grumble. But here’s the thing: Auckland is still a great city. It’s messy, sure, but it’s also vibrant, diverse, and full of places worth rediscovering.
They say the city’s transport is improving — light rail, more buses, bike lanes — and one day I’ll go back and see what’s changed. Until then, here’s what makes Auckland worth a day (or more).
🌆 What to See and Do
- Sky Tower – The tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere, with panoramic views and a glass floor if you’re brave.
- Auckland Art Gallery – A beautiful blend of heritage and modern architecture, with a strong collection of Māori and Pacific art.
- Wynyard Quarter & Viaduct Harbour – Waterfront dining, public art, and a great place to stroll or grab a drink.
- Auckland War Memorial Museum – Set in the Auckland Domain, this museum offers rich insights into New Zealand’s history and natural world.
- Mount Eden (Maungawhau) – A short hike up this dormant volcano rewards you with sweeping views of the city and harbour.
🛍️ Shopping & Food
- Britomart – Upscale boutiques, trendy eateries, and a sleek urban vibe.
- Ponsonby Road – Hipster cafes, vintage shops, and some of the city’s best brunch spots.
- Otāhuhu & Sandringham – For authentic South Asian and Polynesian food, these neighbourhoods are unbeatable.
🌿 Green Spaces & Getaways
- Auckland Domain – The city’s oldest park, perfect for a picnic or a walk under the trees.
- Cornwall Park & One Tree Hill – A mix of volcanic history, sheep paddocks, and panoramic views.
- Waiheke Island – Just a 40-minute ferry ride away, this island is all about beaches, vineyards, and laid-back charm.
🚍 Getting Around
Auckland’s public transport has long been a sore point, but things are changing. The City Rail Link is under construction, and there’s been a push for more frequent buses, ferries, and bike infrastructure. If you’re visiting, grab an AT HOP card for easy travel on buses, trains, and ferries.
🧭 Day Trips from Auckland
- Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves – A magical combo of movie sets and glowworms.
- Matakana – Wine, farmers markets, and sculpture trails.
- Rangitoto Island – A volcanic island hike with epic views of the Hauraki Gulf.
